What is Parallel Compression?
**Parallel compression**—often called **New York Compression**—is a mixing technique where you send a copy of an audio signal to an auxiliary auxiliary bus track, apply aggressive, extreme compression on the bus, and then blend that crushed signal underneath your original, uncompressed dry audio track.
Why Parallel Compression Works So Well
When you compress a track directly on its insert channel, heavy gain reduction squashes dynamic transients (the initial snap of a snare drum or vocal attack).
With parallel compression: 1. **The Dry Track** retains 100% of its sharp, natural dynamic transients. 2. **The Parallel Aux Bus** amplifies low-level sustain, body, room energy, and subtle details. 3. Blending the two together gives you the **best of both worlds**: extreme punch with massive body and presence!
Setting Up Parallel Drum Compression
- •Create an Aux Send track labeled `Drum_Crush_Bus`.
- •Send a copy of your main drum tracks (Kick, Snare, Toms, Percussion) to this bus.
- •Insert a fast FET compressor (e.g., 1176 or VCA compressor):
- • - **Ratio:** 8:1 or "All-Buttons-In" (Nuke mode).
- • - **Attack:** Fast (0.5ms) to catch transients.
- • - **Release:** Medium-Fast (100ms) to make the drum room envelope breathe in tempo.
- • - **Gain Reduction:** Pull threshold down until you get **8 dB to 12 dB** of aggressive compression!
- •Lower the `Drum_Crush_Bus` volume fader to zero, press Play, and slowly raise the crush fader until the drums sound thicker, weightier, and more energetic.
Parallel Vocal Compression for Intimate Body
For lead vocals in Pop, R&B, or Hip-Hop: - Send lead vocals to a `Vocal_Parallel_Bus`. - Apply aggressive optical or tube compression (+8 dB gain reduction) with a subtle high-end shelf boost (+3 dB at 10 kHz). - Blend the parallel fader -12 dB underneath the lead vocal. - **Result:** Soft whispered vocal nuances become clearly audible without making louder sung phrases sound harsh!
